Science Test next Wednesday

Science Chapter 18 Test Notes         Test Date:  Wednesday, June 6
Student Name_________________
 Parent Signature_____________________
1.    A scientist that studies objects in space studies astronomy.
2.    Gravity keeps planets moving in circular paths instead of straight lines.
3.    Mercury is very hot in the daytime and extremely cold during the nighttime because Mercury has no atmosphere to hold the heat.
4.    Mars is an inner planet with no moons. It sometimes has huge dust storms that cover the entire planet.
5.    The second planet from the Sun, Venus, has an atmosphere of thick clouds that reflect the Sun’s light and make it one of the brightest objects in the sky.
6.    Pluto has a moon named Charon.
7.    Uranus is different from the other planets because it rotates on its side.
8.    Life is possible on Earth because it has an atmosphere and liquid water.
9.    A storm that has been raging for hundreds of years causes the Great Red Spot on Jupiter.
10.                       The rings around Saturn are made of water, ice, dust, and chunks of rock.
11.                       Jupiter has the greatest number of moons.
12.                       Essay:  Venus and Earth are two inner planets that are about the same size.  Both are surrounded by an atmosphere, but life is found only on Earth.  Give two reasons why life cannot exist on Venus. (2 points)
Venus is surrounded by a thick atmosphere of hot, poisonous clouds that would poison any living thing on the planet.  Venus is also too hot for life as it exists on Earth because it is so close to the Sun.
13.                       Compare the size of Neptune with the other gas giant planets.  Then compare the size of Neptune with all the inner planets. (2 points)
Neptune is the smallest of the four gas giant planets.  Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are all bigger than Neptune.  However, Neptune is bigger than all of the inner planets.  About 60 Earths could fit inside Neptune.
Extra Credit   The outer planets are found outside the asteroid belt in our solar system.  (4 points)
Part A:  Name the four gas giants that are outer planets and describe a feature of each planet.
Part B: Name the one outer planet that is not a gas giant.  Explain what makes this planet different from the other outer planets.
FUN TO BE FIT
Tomorrow, June 1st, is our 2nd Annual Fun to Be Fit Run.  Unfortunately the forecast for the afternoon is a steady rain.  Due to the number of volunteers scheduled to help us and the many other year-end activities planned across the grade levels we plan to run even if it is raining.  We have tentatively shortened the course so all K-4 students will be running approximately 1 mile.  The course will start outside of the elementary office and finish in the Middle School Gym.  You may want to send your child with a poncho or rain gear as well as an extra set of DRY clothing.  IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RUN, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PICK HIM/HER UP AROUND 12:30 pm.  We are sorry for the alternate change in plans for our special event.

Class Information

The written book report was due May 29 and the shortened versions of an oral book reports done in front of the class will begin Friday the 1st.

The spelling list for next week will consist of words the students have spelled incorrectly this year.  Each student will have a different list.  Lists will go home on Monday to study.

June 7 the 4th Grade will take a field trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.  A note was sent home this week, but we have been advised to be prepared for the possibility of going into an area where there may be ticks.  A news letter explaining precautions was also sent home this week.

June 8th is the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Grade Track and Field Day.  Due to lack of funds, there will not be a ribbon presentation following the games, but we hope you can come to watch the students participate in the events.  A note will be sent home.
